University of Alabama, Birmingham Enhances Campus Boulevard, and the Hill Center with Sunbolt Solar Table Charging Stations
(Birmingham, Alabama January 2016) – The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) was looking for meaningful ways to address infrastructure projects that would be engaging and add value to the campus. Given the University’s interest in sustainability as well as its location in the core of Birmingham, which has a master plan involving a variety of green space and green initiatives, it was a natural fit that the Sunbolt solar table charging stations be integrated. The noticeable solar panels provide an alternative energy source for charging mobile devices and laptops while providing a comfortable place for students to socialize and relax.
“The University of Alabama at Birmingham is the largest single-site employer in Alabama. The tables will be highly visible to people driving by and will showcase our commitment to sustainability.” commented Julie Price, Coordinator of Sustainability at UAB. The UAB Sustainability Program was instrumental in bringing the Sunbolt solar table charging stations to the campus. The tables are located on University Boulevard, a main thoroughfare through the campus and the city of Birmingham, and in front of the newly constructed Hill Student Center. The UAB Hill Center was completed in late fall, and its construction included landscaping the outdoor space. Its central location means it is a congregation area for the University and provides places for students to gather, eat and study. According to Ms. Price, “We also thought they would be a good learning and engagement tool for engineering students,” and “we’re very pleased with the purchase.” The student center held a grand reopening Jan. 20, following completion of construction. The tables will be a noticeable addition to the campus and provide a hands-on interaction with sustainability that students will appreciate.
